  • Total Time: 1 hour

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground breakfast sausage (mild or spicy)
  • 6 large eggs
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 6 cups bread cubes (sourdough or French bread works best)
  • 2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried mustard (optional, for extra tang)

Instructions

  1. Step 1: Brown the Sausage. Place a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the ground sausage and cook until it is completely browned and crumbled, about 8-10 minutes. Drain any excess grease from the pan and set the sausage aside to cool slightly.
  2. Step 2: Prepare the Baking Dish. Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with butter or non-stick cooking spray. Spread the bread cubes evenly across the bottom of the dish to create a solid base for the casserole.
  3. Step 3: Mix the Egg Custard. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, and dried mustard. Ensure the eggs are fully incorporated with the milk to create a smooth, yellow mixture.
  4. Step 4: Layer the Ingredients. Sprinkle the cooked sausage over the bread cubes, then follow with the shredded cheddar cheese. Pour the egg mixture slowly over the top, making sure all the bread pieces are moistened.
  5. Step 5: Bake the Casserole. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake the casserole for 40 to 45 minutes, or until the eggs are set and the top is golden brown. If the top browns too quickly, cover it loosely with foil for the last 10 minutes.
  6. Step 6: Rest and Serve. Remove the dish from the oven and let it rest for 5 to 10 minutes before slicing. This allows the custard to firm up, making it easier to serve clean squares.
