Ingredients
Scale
- 1 lb lean ground beef
- 1/2 small yellow onion, finely diced
- 1/2 green bell pepper, finely diced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 3/4 cup ketchup
- 1 tablespoon brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon yellow mustard
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 package (12 count) slider rolls or Hawaiian rolls
- 1 cup shredded mozzarella or provolone cheese (optional)
- 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 2 tablespoons grated Parmesan cheese
- 1 tablespoon fresh parsley, chopped
Instructions
- In a large skillet over medium-high heat, brown the ground beef along with the diced onion and bell pepper. Use a spatula to break the meat into small crumbles. Cook until the beef is no longer pink and the vegetables have softened, which usually takes about 6-8 minutes. Drain any excess grease from the pan.
- Reduce the heat to medium. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for 1 minute until fragrant. Add the ketchup, brown sugar, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Stir well to combine all ingredients with the beef mixture.
- Let the mixture simmer for about 5-10 minutes, stirring occasionally. The sauce should thicken and coat the meat thoroughly. Once it reaches your desired consistency, remove the skillet from the heat.
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Without pulling the slider rolls apart, slice the entire slab of rolls in half horizontally. Place the bottom half in a baking dish. Spread the sloppy joe mixture evenly over the bottom rolls. If using, sprinkle the shredded mozzarella or provolone cheese over the meat. Place the top half of the rolls back on.
- In a small bowl, whisk together the melted butter, garlic powder, grated Parmesan cheese, and chopped parsley. Using a pastry brush, coat the tops of the slider buns generously with the butter mixture.
- Cover the baking dish loosely with aluminum foil to prevent the tops from burning too quickly. Bake for 10 minutes, then remove the foil and bake for an additional 5 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and the buns are golden brown and toasted.
