Ingredients
Scale
- 12 ounces fresh or frozen cranberries
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1 cup water (or orange juice for extra flavor)
- 1 strip of orange zest (optional)
- A pinch of salt
Instructions
- Start by picking through the cranberries. Remove any berries that are soft, shriveled, or discolored. Place the healthy berries in a colander and rinse them thoroughly under cold running water.
- In a medium saucepan, combine the sugar and water (or orange juice). Stir the mixture over medium heat until the sugar has completely dissolved and the liquid begins to reach a gentle boil.
- Add the rinsed cranberries, orange zest, and a pinch of salt to the saucepan. Bring the mixture back to a boil, then reduce the heat to low. Let the sauce simmer for about 10 to 12 minutes. You will hear the cranberries begin to “pop” as they cook.
- Once most of the cranberries have burst and the sauce has started to thicken slightly, remove the pan from the heat. The sauce will continue to thicken significantly as it cools. Remove the orange zest strip before serving.
